Cubeb pepper, 50 g sack
Piper cubeba belongs to the Family Piperaceae, grows spontaneously and it is cultivated in Java and Sumatra and in the Malay archipelago, and also in Antille and in some areas of Africa.
Its fruits are similar in appearance to the berries of black pepper (Piper nigrum), reason why it is also called "gray pepper". It is distinguishable because, oppositely to black pepper, it has a stalk attached to berry.
The odor of cubebs is described as agreeable and aromatic and the taste as pungent, acrid, slightly bitter and persistent. It is used to flavour meat and sauces.
